India is getting a new 1601 number series for service calls. The move aims to help people tell genuine calls from spam. Banks, insurers, financial firms, and other service providers can use these numbers when calling customers. The idea is to give trusted service calls a clear identity.

The new 1601 series will work along with the existing 1600 number series. So, users may see calls from either series. The number used will depend on the service and the company making the call. This could make it easier to spot calls from approved businesses. While the previous 1600 series number is available to Jio, Vodafone Idea and Airtel, the 1601 will be limited to services and transactional calls. It won’t be used for promotional calls, as directed by TRAI.

The requirement for the 1601 came into existence because the 1600 number was used by banking and financial services, which sometimes ended up being sales calls for loans and insurance. The new number will help people feel less frightened about spam calls. This new number will only be issued to electricity billing services, water providers, gas and LPG providers.

Spam calls are a common problem in India. Many unwanted calls also try to look like they come from banks or other trusted companies. This can make it hard for people to know which calls are safe. The new number series gives users another simple check. If a service call comes through the recognized series, it can be easier to identify.

Still, 1601 will not stop every spam call. Scammers can use regular mobile numbers or other ways to reach people. Users should still avoid sharing OTPs, passwords, or bank details over a call. The results will depend on how many companies start using 1601. People will also need time to get used to the new number.
