What you post on X can reach millions, but how you post it determines whether it stays up.
For creators and everyday users alike, a single untagged image or video can trigger an auto-report, limit your reach, or put your account at risk.
Whether you're sharing graphic news, adult art, or major spoilers, manually tagging sensitive content gives your followers the choice to engage on their own terms.
X is now tightening its content moderation framework, and knowing how to self-regulate your posts has become essential, not optional. Creators and general users who share graphic news, adult art, or spoiler-heavy content are expected to place such material behind an X content warning.
The practice isn't just about compliance. Manual tagging preserves follower trust, reduces the risk of automated flags, and ensures the account remains aligned with the platform's latest safety policies.
There is no need to change global settings or X preferences to hide a specific image or video.
Begin creating a new post and add a photo or video as usual. When ready to post, locate the three-dot icon or the Edit link at the bottom right of the thumbnail images.
In the editing menu, hit the Flag icon (should be the very right one of the set of tools). The Content Warning menu will then appear.

This allows users to choose why they are flagging the content.
Nudity: For adult or suggestive content
Violence: For graphic or sensitive news-related content.
Sensitive: For anything else that could be not safe for work, or just plain offensive.
This will appear at the top corner of the content. Tap Done or Save. A small badge will show on the content, indicating that the warning has been used. After posting, the content will be blurred and display a ‘Warning: Sensitive Content’ label for other users.
It is easier to adjust settings and privacy on X, with a warning applied to all posts if most content is marked as mature.
Navigate to Settings and Support > Settings and privacy.
Select Privacy and safety.
Tap on the posts.
Toggle on the switch for Mark's content to post as potentially sensitive.
Every picture or video uploaded from now on will be automatically hidden behind a warning screen.

Adding a content warning on X takes less than a minute, but the message it sends lasts much longer. 1. Does a content warning mask my text?
No, the Twitter Content warning only obscures the attached content (photos/videos). Your text will be visible to everyone unless your account is set to Private.
2. Will my content still be viewable even if I flag it?
Yes. Users must click Show or View to see the content. This does not delete or block the file, simply introduces a consent barrier.
3. What if I don't use a warning for sensitive content?
If the content you have created has been reported by users and X determines it as sensitive content, it may, on occasion, be forced to present your post with a warning, or if it is reported multiple times, there is the potential for your account being permanently penalized or your content being asked not to be shown.
4. Is there an alternative way for me to view sensitive material without constantly clicking Show?
Yes. You can change your own settings under Content you see, and click to turn on Display content that may contain sensitive content. You'll be free of warnings on your own timeline.
5. How about with GIFs?
Yes. Any images following a post, such as pictures, videos, or GIFs, can be given a content warning via the edit menu before posting.
