Discord has started enabling end-to-end encryption for voice and video calls by default across its platform. The update covers direct messages, group calls, voice channels, and Go Live streams on desktop, mobile, browsers, and gaming consoles.
The company said users will not need to turn on any additional settings. Encryption will work automatically during supported calls.
End-to-end encryption means only people participating in a conversation can access its audio or video content. Discord itself cannot decrypt the calls.
The system runs on Discord’s open-source DAVE protocol, short for Discord Audio and Video Encryption. The company first introduced the protocol in 2023 during limited testing before expanding it platform-wide.
The feature is available on Windows, macOS, Android, iPhone, PlayStation, Xbox, and browser-based versions of Discord.
Platforms such as Signal and WhatsApp already offer end-to-end encrypted communication by default. Discord’s move brings it closer to industry standards around user privacy and secure communication.
The latest rollout does not include text messages. Public community servers and Stage channels also remain outside the encrypted system. Industry observers say moderation requirements may be one reason for the exclusion, since large public communities rely on monitoring tools to manage abuse, spam, and harmful content.
Discord began as a communication platform for gamers but has expanded into a broader social platform used by students, developers, creators, and online communities.

The update comes as technology companies face increasing pressure over data protection and online privacy. Discord has faced criticism in recent years over safety concerns, including debates around age verification systems and data security.
Cybersecurity experts say end-to-end encryption is becoming standard across communication platforms as users demand stronger privacy protections.
For Discord users, the change means voice and video conversations will now have an added layer of security without requiring manual setup.
