A smartphone costing less than Rs. 30,000 can now offer a battery that is substantially larger than what you get on some Rs. 1.4 lakh flagship phones. The gap has become particularly striking in India, where several affordable and mid-range models now pack batteries of 7,000mAh or more.
Realme P4 Power, for example, carries a massive 10,001mAh battery and was launched in India at Rs. 25,999. In comparison, the Rs. 1,39,999 Xiaomi 17 Ultra comes with a 6,000mAh battery, while Samsung’s Galaxy S26 Ultra at the same price has a 5,000mAh cell.
The biggest reason behind this battery boom is silicon-carbon battery technology. Compared with conventional lithium-ion cells, silicon-carbon anodes can store more energy without requiring a proportional increase in physical size.
That has allowed manufacturers to fit phones with batteries approaching 9,000mAh while keeping them relatively slim. Poco X8 Pro Max, for instance, packs a 9,000mAh cell into an 8.2mm body weighing about 220 grams. The OnePlus Nord 6 offers the same capacity in a chassis measuring around 8.5mm thick.
For Indian consumers, the appeal is obvious. Long commutes, 5G connectivity, gaming, video streaming, and unreliable electricity in some areas all increase the importance of battery endurance.
The smaller battery in an expensive phone does not necessarily mean poor battery life. Premium smartphones generally use more efficient processors, better power management, and displays capable of adjusting their refresh rates based on usage. These improvements can help a smaller battery deliver respectable endurance.
However, efficiency does not fully account for the enormous difference in capacity. A Rs. 18,999 Realme P4R, for instance, carries an 8,000mAh battery, while the Galaxy S26 Ultra costs roughly seven times as much but has a 5,000mAh cell.
The difference also reflects what manufacturers prioritize. Budget brands increasingly compete on specifications that consumers can immediately compare, while flagship makers focus on camera systems, premium materials, compact designs and advanced software.
Realme P4 Power currently sits at the top of India's big-battery race with its 10,001mAh cell. It supports 80W charging and 27W reverse charging. Poco X8 Pro Max follows with 9,000mAh and 100W charging, while the OnePlus Nord 6 combines a 9,000mAh battery with 80W charging. The Redmi Note 17 5G and OnePlus Nord CE 6 both carry 8,000mAh batteries.
Even the Rs. 15,999 Moto G67 Power offers a 7,000mAh battery, showing how quickly high-capacity cells have moved down the price ladder.
There is one important catch. Battery capacity is only part of the equation. Charging speed, processor efficiency, display settings, and the phone's software all affect real-world endurance. A large battery can also add weight and thickness.
More importantly, buyers should look beyond the capacity printed on the box. Battery health declines over time, and silicon-carbon cells can lose capacity after repeated charging cycles. Some manufacturers have started publishing battery-cycle information, but many still focus primarily on day-one capacity.
Another detail worth checking is the Indian variant. Battery capacities can differ between Indian and international versions of the same phone. iQOO Z11 is a notable example: its Chinese model has a 9,020mAh battery, while the Indian version launched with a 7,050mAh battery.
For buyers, the message is simple: budget phones are no longer automatically behind flagships in terms of endurance. In fact, if battery life is the priority, an affordable smartphone may now offer considerably more capacity for the money.
