Apple has added a three-band Custom EQ to AirPods in the iOS 27 beta. It gives users direct control over Low, Mid and High audio levels.
The new controls are available through the AirPods settings menu. Users can connect a supported pair, open Settings, select the AirPods name, tap Audio and Routing, then choose Equalizer and Custom.
The feature is currently tied to Apple’s beta software and compatible AirPods firmware. Users may not see the option without the required firmware update.
The current beta compatibility list covers six AirPods models or case variants. These include AirPods 4 and AirPods 4 with Active Noise Cancellation. Both AirPods Pro 2 versions are also supported.
The list covers the USB-C and Lightning charging case models. AirPods Pro 3 and AirPods Max 2 are also included. The first supporting beta firmware was 9A292e. Stable firmware versions vary across AirPods models, so users should not treat one firmware number as a universal requirement.
Apple has not yet published a final model list for the public iOS 27 release. Support could change before the software reaches all users in autumn.
The new AirPods EQ offers only three bands. That makes it simple to use, though large changes can produce less balanced results. A better approach is to start with Apple’s Recommended setting. Users can then make a small adjustment to one band and compare the same section of a song at the same volume.
The Low control can affect bass-heavy audio. Mid adjustments can change the balance of vocals and instruments. High settings can alter the brightness and detail of the sound. Other audio features can also affect the result. Apple Music EQ and Headphone Accommodations should be considered separately while testing the new controls.
For beta users, the feature offers a useful way to personalize AirPods sound without relying on a single preset. The final experience could still change before iOS 27 reaches its public release.
