Stock exchanges are central to the functioning of modern financial markets, connecting companies seeking capital with investors looking to buy and sell securities. Among the most closely watched exchanges are the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE) in the US, the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE), and the London Stock Exchange (LSE) in the UK.
While all three provide platforms for trading securities, they operate within different regulatory environments, market structures and economies. Understanding these differences helps explain how the US, Indian, and UK equity markets function.
The New York Stock Exchange is one of the world's largest equity exchanges. Its origins date back to the Buttonwood Agreement signed by 24 stockbrokers on May 17, 1792. Today, the NYSE operates several equity markets through its NYSE Pillar trading technology.
The exchange is notable for combining electronic trading with a physical trading floor. It also uses designated market makers for primary listings and conducts opening and closing auctions for primarily listed securities. According to NYSE, it remains the only US equities exchange operating a trading floor.
The NYSE is home to companies across industries, including financial services, healthcare, industrials, consumer businesses and technology. The exchange says its listed community includes more than 2,400 public companies and represents 74% of publicly listed Fortune 500 companies, based on figures the exchange cited as of May 12, 2025.
The National Stock Exchange of India was established in 1992 and began operations in the equities segment on November 3, 1994. It was the first exchange in India to implement electronic or screen-based trading.
NSE is thus one of the key players within India's capital market structure. It has claimed that it was the biggest multi-asset class exchange in terms of the number of trades in cash equities and equity derivatives during fiscal 2026.
It has a wide equity market with a lot of listed securities. According to NSE, there were more than 2,700 securities listed on the exchange with market capitalization of over Rs. 410.9 lakh crore as of March 2025. The average daily turnover of NSE in the equity segment grew from Rs. 17 crore in 1994-95 to about Rs. 1,12,963 crore in 2024-25.
Furthermore, NSE is linked with the Nifty 50 index of India, where 50 leading companies listed on the exchange are measured using this index.

The LSE is able to provide international issuer and also international investment capital. FTSE 100 is one of the most famous benchmarks related to the London Stock Exchange. This index measures the largest companies that are quoted in London.
Trading timings is one more feature that can differentiate NYSE and LSE. NYSE conducts trading during regular hours from 9:30 am to 4 pm Eastern Standard Time Monday through Friday. The trading hours for LSE begin at 8 am and end at 4:30 pm London time.
NSE in India trades according to its own schedule of trading and employs an electronic trading system. The use of technological solutions by NSE started with its foundation.

The biggest distinction between the three exchanges is the market they serve. The NYSE provides access to the US equity market, NSE is a major platform for Indian securities, while the LSE connects investors with UK, European, and international securities.
Moreover, their benchmark indices are also different. There is a strong link between NYSE and major US stock indices due to the listing of their firms on this exchange. In turn, NSE has a strong connection to Nifty 50, whereas LSE is strongly connected to FTSE 100.
However, despite all differences, the essence of their function remains the same – these exchanges act as regulated platforms for the listing and trading of securities.
