YouTube's Personalized Feed: 5 Things Users Should Know

Soham Halder

Why Your YouTube Feed Looks Different: YouTube personalizes its Home feed, Shorts and suggested videos based on your interests and viewing activity. Two users searching for different topics may see completely different recommendations, even when they open the app at the same time.

Your Watch History Shapes Recommendations: The videos you watch help YouTube identify topics you may enjoy. If you frequently watch cricket highlights, tech reviews or cooking tutorials, the platform may recommend more videos related to those interests.

Searches and Likes Also Matter: Your YouTube searches, subscriptions, likes and dislikes provide additional signals about your preferences. These signals help the platform suggest relevant creators and videos, although recommendations can still include content from channels you have never watched before.

You Can Train Your Feed: Not interested in a recommendation? Tap the three-dot menu beside the video and select Not interested. Choose Don't recommend channel to reduce suggestions from a particular creator. Your feedback helps YouTube adjust future recommendations.

You Can Reset Your Recommendations: Want a fresh start? You can delete or pause your YouTube watch and search history in your account settings. Keep in mind that turning off watch history without having significant prior history can leave your Home feed without its usual personalized video recommendations.

Incognito Mode Keeps Viewing Separate: Want to watch videos without affecting your regular recommendations? YouTube’s Incognito mode lets you browse without linking that session’s activity to your signed-in account’s search and watch history. However, it does not make your internet activity completely private from websites or network providers.

Autoplay Can Influence What You Watch Next: YouTube’s Autoplay feature automatically plays another recommended video when the current one ends. Turning it off gives you more control over what plays next and can help keep your viewing session shorter than planned.
