The Xbox Series X has become significantly more expensive in 2026. Prices reportedly range from $725 to $900, depending on the model and storage configuration. The 1TB disc version costs around $799, making it harder to justify buying an older-generation console at such a high price.
Storage can become a major problem for regular gamers. The standard Xbox Series X comes with a 1TB SSD, which can fill up quickly with large AAA games. Regular external USB drives can store games, but optimised Series X games generally need the internal SSD or an official Storage Expansion Card to run.
Expanding Xbox Series X storage can be expensive. Microsoft uses dedicated Storage Expansion Cards that match the console's internal SSD performance. These cards are sold separately and can increase the overall gaming cost. The console also lacks a USB-C port, which limits its modern connectivity options.
Xbox Game Pass adds another recurring expense. In India, Essential costs Rs. 499 per month, Premium costs Rs. 699, and Ultimate costs Rs. 1,089. Day-one releases require Ultimate, while cloud gaming will be limited to 15 hours monthly on Ultimate from November 2026.
Xbox Series X has fewer console-exclusive games than earlier generations. Microsoft increasingly releases its first-party titles on PC and other platforms, reducing the need to own a separate Xbox. Gamers who already have a powerful Windows gaming PC may find more value in using PC Game Pass instead.
The console's 4K and 120FPS performance also depends on compatible hardware and games. A supported game and a 4K display with a 120Hz refresh rate are required to experience these features together. Without the right TV or monitor, gamers cannot fully enjoy the console's advertised performance.
The Xbox Series X controller uses replaceable AA batteries instead of a built-in rechargeable battery. Gamers need spare batteries or a separate rechargeable battery kit for convenient wireless play. The console also lacks native VR headset support, which could disappoint players interested in virtual reality gaming.
