AI Is Redrawing the Cyber Battlefield: Artificial intelligence is changing both cyberattacks and cybersecurity. Attackers can automate tasks, while defenders are using AI for detection and response. The result is a rapidly changing security environment where organizations must protect traditional systems as well as AI applications, models, and data.

Gartner identifies AI application compromise as a critical threat because weak controls can expose sensitive data, credentials, and integrations. Custom agents and employee-facing AI systems can further expand the attack surface.

Google Threat Intelligence has tracked attackers targeting developers, AI coding assistants and LLM security tools. Compromised software components can potentially spread malicious activity through otherwise trusted development environments.

AI Agents Raise the Stakes: AI agents can execute multi-step tasks with far less human intervention than traditional software. That speed can also amplify mistakes or attacks when agents have excessive permissions. The World Economic Forum highlights risks involving credentials, prompt injection, excessive privileges and automated propagation of vulnerabilities.

Security Teams Are Adapting: AI is also becoming part of the defence strategy. The World Economic Forum says 77% of surveyed organisations reported using AI for cybersecurity, including phishing detection and intrusion response. The challenge is building strong governance, monitoring and human oversight around increasingly autonomous systems.
