7 Ways Apple is Bringing AI into its Ecosystem

Siri Gets an AI Rebuild: Apple rebuilt Siri from the ground up for iOS 27, released on September 14. A dedicated Siri app stores conversation history, letting users resume earlier chats. Siri handles multi-step requests, follow-up questions, and personal context, and appears in a darker Dynamic Island interface instead of the old colorful edge glow.

Google Gemini Powers the Models: Apple and Google jointly announced a multi-year collaboration on January 12, 2026. Apple's Next-Generation Foundation Models will be based on Google’s Gemini models and cloud technology. The deal is reportedly non-exclusive. Apple says most features run offline, and any requests that need the cloud are transmitted securely.

Core Apps Get Smarter: Apple Intelligence runs through the apps people use. Safari organizes tabs into topics, monitors webpages for changes, and builds extensions from plain descriptions. Photos adds Clean Up, Expand and Reframe tools under a new Tools tab. Messages, Mail and Calendar understand context, suggest actions and create events from simple prompts.

Writing Help Everywhere: Write with Siri lets users describe what they need and get a draft from scratch, an edit of existing text, or feedback, almost anywhere they type. It can also learn how users communicate with specific contacts. A new systemwide automatic proofreading feature offers suggestions for both spelling and grammar revisions.

Visual Intelligence Expands: Visual Intelligence lets users search and act on what is on screen, accessed through the screenshot buttons since iOS 26. In iOS 27, it integrates with Siri and adds new features. It is also coming to visionOS 27, taking the feature beyond the iPhone to Vision Pro headsets.

Live Translation Across Devices: Live Translation, introduced with iOS 26, works inside Messages, FaceTime, and Phone. Messages translate automatically, FaceTime shows translated live captions, and phone calls speak the translation aloud. Apple says the models run entirely on device, so personal conversations stay private. A version for AirPods translates what people say in person.

Developers Get the On-Device Model: Apple opened the on-device foundation model behind Apple Intelligence to developers through the Foundation Models framework. It has native Swift support, works offline, and carries no AI inference cost. Guided generation and tool calling come built in. Apps can tap the model with as few as three lines of code.
