SpaceX Wants to Go Beyond Satellite Internet: SpaceX is exploring a bigger role in the mobile connectivity market through its Starlink business. Instead of remaining a satellite internet provider, the company could combine space-based connectivity with traditional mobile network infrastructure to challenge established telecom operators.
Expand Starlink Direct-to-Cell Services: Starlink Direct to Cell already works with mobile network operators to connect compatible smartphones through satellites in areas with limited cellular coverage. SpaceX could expand this service to support more than messaging, including voice calls and mobile data, making satellite connectivity a more practical alternative when traditional networks are unavailable.
Build Its Own Terrestrial 5G Network: SpaceX has indicated plans to build ground-based mobile infrastructure instead of depending entirely on satellites. Its proposed approach includes deploying smaller, lower-cost base stations connected to Starlink infrastructure. A Qualcomm partnership announced in November 2026 will supply radio equipment, baseband units, and software for a planned nationwide 5G network, with deployment expected to begin in 2027.
Acquire More Wireless Spectrum: Spectrum is essential for transmitting mobile signals. SpaceX agreed to acquire 65 MHz of wireless spectrum from EchoStar in deals valued at approximately $19.6 billion. The company has also struck a deal to acquire a nationwide low-band spectrum portfolio from Grain Management. These assets could help Starlink expand beyond satellite-based connectivity and build its own terrestrial mobile services.
Partner With or Acquire Telecom Operators: Building a mobile network from scratch is expensive and time-consuming. SpaceX could accelerate its entry through partnerships, network-sharing agreements, or acquisitions of existing telecom businesses. Its EchoStar agreement also includes commercial arrangements to connect Boost Mobile subscribers with next-generation Starlink services. Such relationships could help SpaceX reach customers faster.
Combine Satellite and Mobile Connectivity:SpaceX could differentiate its service by combining conventional cellular networks with satellite coverage. Customers could use terrestrial 5G where infrastructure exists and connect through Starlink satellites in remote locations or coverage gaps. This hybrid approach could be particularly useful for travelers, rural communities, emergency services, and businesses operating in isolated regions.
Can SpaceX Challenge Telecom Giants? : SpaceX has the satellites, spectrum ambitions, and technology partnerships to make a serious entry into mobile connectivity. However, competing with established operators such as AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile will require huge investments, regulatory approvals, reliable coverage, and competitive pricing. Its planned terrestrial network is still a work in progress, with major deployment expected from 2027.
