Artificial intelligence became a key topic of discussion between the United States and China, as both countries face growing concerns over the development and governance of this rapidly advancing technology.
During his visit to Washington, Chinese President Xi Jinping said, “We have both the capability and responsibility to develop and manage AI for good and ensure that the development of AI is always under human control and serves the well-being of the people.”
Washington and Beijing continue to compete in advanced technology while managing broader tensions in their relationship.
Trump earlier said artificial intelligence, which he referred to as ‘superintelligence’, would be high on the agenda. He clarified that he wanted to leave the issue ‘exactly where it is’, and that China also shared the same views.
The discussions come amid growing concerns over the impact of increasingly powerful AI systems, including their potential effects on jobs and broader risks associated with the technology.
The two countries’ finance ministers met earlier in the week. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said the two countries could consider a new ‘notification mechanism’ for AI incidents that could affect national security.

Xi also said he and Trump respect each other, maintain regular communication and support cooperation in areas including foreign affairs, trade, finance and law enforcement. He further added that China’s doors remain open for US firms to invest.
The two leaders are also dealing with disagreements over trade, Taiwan, and technology. Xi wants the US to permanently halt arms sales to Taiwan and loosen restrictions on advanced chips, while the two sides continue discussions on their trade truce.
Xi said competition between China and the US should be “a healthy one, and should be kept within bounds”.
