The United Arab Emirates has unveiled sweeping enhancements to its golden visa scheme, empowering long-term residents with new consular services once reserved for Emirati nationals. The bold initiative took centre stage at GITEX Global 2025, where officials described the move as “unprecedented” and a first in the world.
Under the new rules, holders of the 10-year golden visa will access overseas support via UAE embassies and consulates. If a holder loses or damages their passport abroad, the ministry will issue an electronic return document valid for seven days to allow smooth travel back to the UAE.
A dedicated 24/7 hotline now links golden visa holders to UAE foreign affairs support at any time of day. Emergency services now extend to crisis zones abroad: visa holders will be included in evacuation plans, repatriation, and burial arrangements. These benefits also cover dependents registered under the golden visa, including spouses and children.
Omar Obaid Alhesan Alshamsi, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, said the update reinforces the UAE’s reputation as one of the world’s most competitive nations in attracting global talent.
The golden visa already offers long-term residence for investors, entrepreneurs, skilled professionals, and exceptional students. In recent years, the UAE expanded eligibility to include educators, content creators, nurses, and e-sports professionals.
Application and fee criteria remain unchanged. Investment, professional, or nomination routes still apply.
These new consular services mark a shift in how the UAE views its long-term residents - not just as expatriates but as partners with rights abroad. Officials call this evolution part of the “Year of Community - Hand in Hand” theme.
With this update, the UAE sets a precedent: long-stay foreign residents receive extra protection when abroad. For many, this turns the golden visa into more than a residence permit; it becomes a safety net across borders.
