Spotify is all set to bring an AI-powered remix and covers service in the first quarter of 2027, according to a Financial Times report. The streaming company may unveil the feature around the Grammy Awards in February, the report said.

Spotify will restrict the feature to licensed recordings and artists who agree to participate. The company is considering an additional charge of USD 4 to USD 5 a month for the tool. Spotify has confirmed that it plans a paid Premium add-on, but it has not announced a final price or launch date.

Licensing Remains Key

Reportedly, Spotify signed feature-specific licensing agreements with Universal Music Group, Merlin, Kobalt and Believe. These deals will form the foundation for the AI remix service. Talks with Sony Music and Warner Music are still underway. Spotify also held discussions with individual artists to encourage them to opt in to the program.

It could also help Spotify address concerns from rights holders. By limiting the feature to licensed music and sharing royalties, the company aims to position AI as a collaborative tool for artists and fans.

The company plans to route royalties generated from fan-made remixes to the original artists and songwriters. It also intends to count plays of authorised remixes towards the original tracks in Spotify’s charts.

A New Revenue Opportunity

The move signals Spotify’s attempt to turn generative AI into a monetisable feature rather than a threat to the music industry. A paid remix tool could deepen engagement among Premium subscribers and create a fresh revenue stream beyond standard subscriptions.

The proposal comes as music companies continue to debate how AI should be used in creative work. Spotify’s approach, if implemented as reported, would place licensing and artist consent at the centre of its AI strategy.
