Sony has officially launched the new Xperia 1 VIII, marking one of the company’s biggest smartphone redesigns in recent years. The flagship model features a refreshed camera module, upgraded AI-powered photography tools, and improved telephoto camera hardware as Sony attempts to strengthen its position in the premium smartphone segment.
Xperia 1 VIII moves away from Sony’s long-standing vertically aligned rear camera setup and introduces a square-shaped camera island design. The phone also features a new ORE design language inspired by natural textures and gemstones, with colour options including black, silver, red, and gold variants.
One of the key highlights of Xperia 1 VIII is it includes the newly launched AI Camera Assistant by Sony driven by Xperia Intelligence. The system uses AI to recommend camera settings such as lens selection, colour tones, and bokeh effects depending on the subject and lighting conditions.
According to Sony, the AI Camera Assistant enables users to achieve professional shots with ease while still maintaining the innovative Xperia spirit. The company continues to position Xperia devices closer to Sony’s Alpha camera ecosystem rather than mainstream smartphone photography trends.
The smartphone also introduces a significantly upgraded telephoto camera featuring a 1/1.56-inch sensor that is reportedly almost four times larger than the previous generation. Sony claims the larger sensor improves low-light photography and long-range image quality substantially.
Xperia 1 VIII is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset and includes up to 16GB RAM and 1TB storage on premium variants.
The phone features a 6.5-inch OLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate and continues Sony’s focus on cinematic display quality and creator-oriented multimedia performance. It has also retained features that remain popular among Xperia enthusiasts, including:
A dedicated physical shutter button
Stereo speakers
Expandable storage
A 3.5mm headphone jack
The device includes a 5,000mAh battery, and Sony claims it can deliver up to two days of battery life under regular usage conditions.
Despite the upgrades, pricing is the major discussion point around Xperia 1 VIII launch. The price of this gadget is estimated to be around €1,499 for its basic mode (12GB/256GB ), while the 16GB / 1TB Native Gold model can cost almost €1,999. This phone will probably be available in European and Asian regions only, without any plans for releasing it in North America yet.
Online discussions among Xperia users show mixed reactions. While many users praised Sony’s redesign and camera upgrades, others expressed concerns over pricing and limited market availability.
The Xperia launch also comes amid ongoing speculation about Sony’s long-term smartphone strategy. Earlier this year, Sony executives reportedly confirmed that the company has no plans to discontinue or diverge from the Xperia smartphone business despite restructuring discussions around other divisions.
The newly introduced Sony Xperia 1 VIII suggests that Sony still targets a small segment of the market that appreciates quality camera control capabilities, multimedia excellence, and professional-level hardware. It does not plan on competing with the large and popular flagship smartphones.
Amidst the growing competition between AI-empowered smartphone cameras, Sony appears to be developing the Xperia smartphone line as a specialized premium phone.
