A newly surfaced Sony patent has reignited speculation surrounding the rumored PlayStation 6, offering a glimpse into what could be a major upgrade for the company’s next-generation console. The patent details an advanced cooling system designed to improve heat management, an area that is becoming increasingly important as gaming hardware grows more powerful.
Sony has not confirmed that the technology is intended for the PlayStation 6, nor has it officially announced the console. However, the filing has attracted attention because it focuses on a critical aspect of console performance, keeping internal components cool during demanding gaming sessions.
This patent outlines a new kind of heat pipe for transferring heat more efficiently from the processor. Similar to ordinary heat pipes, the system consists of a sealed fluid in which evaporation occurs once it gets heated, and then condensation takes place after giving off heat.
Sony’s design incorporates changes in the internal structure that improve cooling fluid transfer, so the system remains functional without any change in performance. As per the patent, the cooling process will be effective whether the console is used in vertical or horizontal positions.
Modern consoles require a lot of cooling because of the powerful processors within them and the ever-growing demands placed on their functionality.
As it stands now, the PlayStation 5 features a custom AMD processor which is cooled through liquid metal. This recent patent shows that Sony is trying to find other ways to improve their consoles, as the demands on them keep increasing.
