French authorities filed a case against smart glasses, accusing these gadgets of being a medium of sexual harassment. In Paris, prosecutors have opened a criminal investigation after the French authorities received complaints about the use of smart glasses.
The case follows a social media trend in which women were reportedly filmed on streets without their knowledge, and the videos were later shared online. French authorities have also tested the devices to understand how they can be used in such cases.
Meta’s camera-enabled glasses, which have a built-in camera for recording, were a global hit, with more than 7 million sales. However, from the very beginning, the camera attachment was controversial.
Fueling the controversy, France’s data protection authority, CNIL, has received fewer than 10 complaints about smart glasses being used at workplaces. Some businesses have also asked whether they can stop employees from using them. Privacy groups have also questioned whether the light is enough to tell people that they are being filmed.
The concern is bigger than one brand. Smart glasses can look like normal eyewear while carrying cameras, microphones, and AI tools. Even recently, Australia has declared that it is going to ban the use of camera-equipped smart glasses in government workplaces citing privacy and security concerns.
