Google employees are increasingly using the ‘Agent Smith’ tool to automate coding tasks. Co-founder Sergey Brin also highlighted the growing role of AI agents, which signals a shift in software development workflows. The new AI agent operates asynchronously, which means it can run even when the employee is offline or their laptop is closed.

What is Agent Smith Tool?

Agent Smith is built on Google's Antigravity platform. It can interact with various internal tools, which operate asynchronously in the background and allow employees to give instructions directly from their phones.

Smith is a special AI tool as it has access to employee profiles and can autonomously pull up specific documents that employees would otherwise need to search for manually. The tool can be accessed directly from Google's internal chat platform.

The name of the tool takes reference from the famous Sci-Fi film The Matrix. In the film, Smith is a software agent inside the simulated world designed to monitor, control, and maintain order, and is capable of acting independently and intelligently.

Why Google Employees are Adopting It

Google employees have begun using a new internal AI tool called "Agent Smith" that can automate tasks like coding, according to a report by Business Insider.

The AI agent has become so popular inside the company that the tech giant had to restrict access to handle the sudden influx of employees using it. This agentic AI tool is already proving to be a big help as the company pushes to adopt AI to boost efficiency.

A Google spokesperson said to news agencies, "We're always experimenting with new ways to build agents that solve real-world problems for people and businesses, but we don't have anything to share right now."

Sergey Brin’s Vision for AI Agents

During a town hall meeting for sales employees, Google co-founder Sergey Brin reportedly noted that agents will play a big role inside the company this year. Brin is also said to have hinted that Google is developing a tool similar to OpenClaw. It is not clear if Agent Smith is truly Google's answer to OpenClaw or if another tool is in the works.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has also encouraged employees to adopt AI tools. According to reports, some teams have even been told that the use of AI may be considered in performance evaluations.

In certain cases, Google employees have even been informed that their adoption of AI will be factored into their performance reviews.

The Bigger Picture: Rise of AI Agents

Agentic AI systems have become a key focus across the technology industry. OpenClaw went viral with its open-source platform. It can perform multi-step tasks by interacting directly with a user’s operating system. The platform, along with its creator Peter Steinberger, was later acquired by OpenAI. Anthropic has also been adding similar agentic AI features to Claude.

The rise of AI agents signals a shift toward autonomous digital systems capable of performing complex tasks with minimal human input. As adoption grows, businesses and users should balance efficiency gains with concerns around control, transparency, and long-term accountability.
