The race to adopt artificial intelligence is moving at breakneck speed, but Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella believes businesses should pause and think about what they might lose along the way.
Concerning AI’s future, Nadella stated that there is a possibility of sectors becoming hollowed out if the companies excessively rely on the power of a few technology providers. According to him, firms run the risk of losing everything that they have gained from years of effort by outsourcing everything to platforms outside their firms.
Nadella noted that this period is similar to other periods of economic transformation, such as globalization. These transformations provided some gains in efficiency, but also resulted in certain sectors being left behind. He suggested AI could follow a similar path if its benefits are concentrated among only a few powerful players.

His comments arrive as businesses across the world rush to bring AI into everyday operations. Many see the technology as a way to work faster, reduce costs, and improve services. Nadella does not disagree with that promise. Instead, he argues that companies should use AI as a tool that supports their people and strengthens their capabilities.
The warning carries extra weight as it comes from the head of one of the companies helping drive the AI boom. Rather than focusing on the technology itself, Nadella's message centered on the people and businesses using it.
In Satya Nadella’s opinion, success is determined not by the strength of the technology but rather by its ability to assist organizations in growing and maintaining their competencies and connections within the organization.
