Sony may not be ready to lock in the PS6 launch date yet. Sony CEO Hiroki Totoki has confirmed that the company has still not decided when its next console will arrive. Recently, in an interview with The Wall Street Journal, the Sony CEO shared multiple aspects of the company’s business strategies. While discussing the next-gen PlayStation console, the CEO said the company is struggling primarily due to rising costs of memory and components. These could impact its plans for new hardware.
The PS6 was widely expected to follow the usual PlayStation cycle. The PS5 launched in November 2020, so a seven-year gap would put the next console in 2027. However, 2028 is now being discussed as a possible launch year. Some analysts believe Sony’s move away from physical game production from January 2028 could also point to a PS6 launch around that time.
Sony has generally kept its main console generations around six or seven years apart. The PS3 launched in 2006, followed by the PS4 in 2013. The PS5 arrived in 2020, seven years later. This made 2027 the obvious target for PS6 based on the old pattern.
Still, the current generation has faced its own problems. PS5 supply issues hampered the console's early years. Rising hardware costs are also making the next launch harder to plan. Former Sony executive Shuhei Yoshida previously said 2028 felt more realistic for the PS6. Other reports have even suggested the console could arrive after 2028.
For now, Sony has not given fans a confirmed PS6 date. A late 2027 launch remains possible, while 2028 has become a stronger possibility.
The wait may be frustrating, but Sony appears more focused on getting the timing right than rushing out new hardware. For PS5 owners, this could mean the current console has a longer run ahead.
