Rumors about PS6 have been in the air for a while. However, Sony has never announced any official information about the next-gen console, including a solid release date. A few months earlier, Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki mentioned that the PlayStation 6 release date and price are still undecided.
One of the reasons for the price hike is that DRAM prices have climbed since 2024, which pushed the launch of PS6 toward 2028. Sony may not want to launch a new console as its parts become more expensive. Similarly, AMD RDNA 5 silicon is required for PS5, and Xbox Project Helix has been delayed to late 2027 or early 2028. That’s another reason that could have pushed the launch to 2028.
Additionally, GTA 6 might be a reason behind this delay. The game is scheduled for November 2026, so Sony might not want to enter the competitive market with its new hardware then.
The PS5 also gives Sony little reason to hurry. The console is still selling well and has a strong game lineup. Sony’s gaming business reported a record operating profit of ¥463.3 billion for the financial year ended March 2026. PS5 shipments fell from 18.5 million to 16 million units, yet the business remained highly profitable.
The PS5 is not running out of steam yet. GTA 6 is scheduled to launch on the console in 2026. A huge release like this could keep players interested in the PS5 for longer. For Sony, waiting may be the safer move. The PS5 still has a lot going for it. A 2028 launch could give the PS6 better hardware and a more stable price.
