Sony is facing fresh criticism after announcing that it will remove physical game discs from January 2028. Earlier this month, Sony made a few decisions, including raising the price of PS5 consoles and withdrawing physical discs. The former concerned players, but the latter generated continuous backlash from players across the world.
A recent post surfaced on X where fans agreed to initiate a 1-week #PSBlackout in August, during which they will avoid logging in, playing sessions, and making game purchases from Sony’s store. Even though there’s one petition asking Sony not to ‘kill the disc’ that has more than 3,45,00 signatures.
Some fans on social platforms have expressed their disappointment, saying, “Whether it's closing beloved studios like Bluepoint, pursuing a misguided live-service strategy, canceling fan events, leaving PS VR2 to die, or being completely out of touch with the franchises players want to see return, PlayStation has never felt more disconnected from its community. Ending physical discs in 2028 feels like the last straw.”
While Sony has not changed its reported plans, the discussion has become one of the biggest topics in the gaming community.
For many gamers, the real issue is not the disc itself; it is about ownership. When people buy a digital game, they usually receive a license to play it rather than owning the game forever.
Physical copies give players more freedom, as they can lend a game to someone else, keep it for years, or sell it later. Digital games depend on online stores and account access. If a game is removed or a service changes, players may lose access to content they paid for. This is why many gamers still believe physical copies have value.
