Sony may take longer to launch PlayStation 6. The company has pointed out the rising cost of hardware as one of the factors delaying the production of the next-gen PlayStation platform. Recently, Sony CFO Lin Tao has spoken about PS6, though she never took the name. In an interview she mentioned that the console is ‘progressing as scheduled’ and the team is making ‘solid progress.’
Along with that, she has mentioned the excellent sales of PS5 in 2026. The console has sold around 97.9 million PS5 units as of September 30, 2026, after 2.6 million sales in the July–September quarter.
Despite these strong sales, Sony has not shared a release date or price for the PS6. Tao stated, “Although new PS5 unit sales are gradually declining as expected at this stage of the console life cycle, the PlayStation platform continues to expand and grow in a stable manner.”
The company is still looking at market conditions before making a decision about PS6. With memory prices expected to stay high through 2027, Sony may have to rethink its plans for the next console. This could also affect how much players will need to pay when the PS6 arrives.
The main issue is the rising cost of making consoles. Sony needs to buy memory chips and other parts before it can build a PS6. When these parts become more expensive, the cost of making each console also goes up.
Sony's past console prices show how much things have changed. The standard PS5 launched at USD 499.99 in 2020, while the Digital Edition cost USD 399.99. The PS5 Pro arrived in 2024 with a price tag of USD 699.99. By April 2026, the standard PS5 had reached USD 649.99, while the PS5 Pro cost USD 899.99 in the US.
If the PS6 launches at an even higher price, some players may wait before upgrading. Sony will have to find a balance between rising costs and what buyers are willing to spend.
Sony has not confirmed the PS6 release date yet. Rising memory prices could make its plans harder, but there is no confirmed delay. For now, PS5 owners will have to wait for more details about the next PlayStation console.
