Google started rolling out new Gemini voice controls for Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a. The update arrived through the Pixel Buds companion app on September 29. Google is delivering the feature through the Play Store as part of its September software rollout. The update lets Gemini control several earbud settings through spoken commands without opening the Pixel Buds app. 

The new controls target Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a users with app version 1.0.981607934. Google announced these upgrades during its August Pixel 11 launch and scheduled software updates for September. Gemini handles requests through the phone, then connects with the earbuds to apply each requested change.

Google says, “Adjust your Buds settings with Gemini. Just say ‘Hey Google, turn up the bass.’” The voice controls can change EQ presets, adjust bass levels and switch noise control modes. Gemini can also enable or disable Conversation Detection and modify touch control settings. 

After a voice command, Gemini displays an overlay before connecting with the paired Pixel Buds. A ‘Connecting to Pixel Buds’ message appears before Gemini confirms the requested change. The confirmation arrives both visually and through spoken feedback for supported commands.

The rollout also adds a more direct connection between Gemini and Pixel Buds settings. Without the required app update, similar commands can instead open Android's Bluetooth settings page. Google is distributing version 1.0.981607934 through the Play Store, with availability reaching devices gradually. 

Google also prepared several additional Pixel Buds features that require separate firmware support. Dynamic ANC will compensate for subtle changes in the earbuds' seal during regular movement. This approach aims to maintain consistent active noise cancellation when the earbuds shift slightly. 

Pixel Watch sleep sync will detect when the wearer falls asleep and pause music automatically. The feature can also disable touch controls and silence notifications during sleep. Live Translate will receive an upgrade that lets Pixel Buds trigger translated conversations directly through earbud interactions. 

Pixel Buds Pro 2 and Pixel Buds 2a owners can check the Play Store for the latest app. The Gemini feature also requires Gemini as the digital assistant on a compatible Android device.
