Perplexity AI has introduced its ‘Personal Computer’, an AI agent that lets a Mac perform tasks across applications, files, and browser sessions with minimal user intervention. It runs through the Perplexity Mac app and connects the device to external processing systems, enabling coordinated task execution.
The setup typically operates on a continuously active Mac, such as a Mac mini, and remains available in the background, ready to process assigned work without repeated input.
The AI agent is designed to interact directly with the operating system and has access to files, applications, and browser activity. It can open software, read documents, and move between tasks without requiring manual navigation.
Once a task is assigned, it proceeds to execute it across different tools. This includes drafting emails, analysing documents, or managing workflows that involve multiple applications. The process does not depend on step-by-step instructions, as the system determines the sequence internally.
The Personal Computer runs on a combination of models that handle different parts of a task.
Each unit is allotted a particular responsibility, like processing the data, formatting the data, or performing some action within an application.
It enables the system to handle multiple processes from start to end.
It can continue working in the background for a long period, especially for those processes that need continuous processing.
Perplexity has included several control measures within the system. Actions that involve sensitive data or external communication require user approval. Workflows involving sensitive information or interaction outside the system must be user-authorized. Logs are created to document activities.
There is also an automatic stop function that permits the user to terminate a process at any time. All tasks are processed in secure settings to minimize the likelihood of unintentional exposure.
