OpenAI has launched its first branded hardware product, the Codex Micro, a programmable mechanical macropad in partnership with Work Louder. Unlike earlier speculation around a Jony Ive-designed AI device, the launch is focused on developers using Codex, the AI coding and productivity assistant from OpenAI.

The device is priced at $230 and is being released in limited quantities. It arrives as Codex nears 9 million users globally, and the accessory is a niche yet strategic product targeted at developers who work with AI coding workflows.

What Is Codex Micro?

Codex Micro is a mechanical macropad that is compact and easy to use, allowing users to monitor and control AI agents more quickly. The company said the product is a “limited-run collaboration” with Work Louder.

The device is based on Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2-style hardware, with Codex-specific controls. While Work Louder’s standard Creator Micro 2 reportedly starts at around $144, the OpenAI version costs more as it also includes dedicated AI-agent features.

Key Features of Codex Micro

The most notable change is the row of six Agent Keys. These keys glow in different colours to show the live status of Codex agents. Idle: a white light, Processing: a blue light, Complete: a green light, Error: a red light.

Double-tapping will activate the agent, and single-tapping selects the assigned agent. These keys can be customized by users using Work Louder's Input setting tool, and they can be programmed to go to pinned Codex tasks, recent tasks, a specific workflow, or a specific agent.

There are 6 programmable keys in the bottom row, which are preprogrammed for functions such as accepting or rejecting code changes and branching threads. A larger key enables voice control using push-to-talk (PTT) with Codex.

Joystick, Dial and Connectivity

There is also a joystick and rotary dial on the Codex Micro. The joystick is used to move Codex's composer bar, and the dial is used for selections by default. Both can be remapped.

The macropad also features an LED-lit acrylic edge that will light up when Codex is listening and the microphone is active.

There are silent and clicky switches available, as well as USB-C, Bluetooth options, and keycap swapping. Work Louder includes 32 additional keycaps, including playful options like “yolo” and “yeet.”

Why It Matters

Codex Micro is not a commonplace AI gadget. It is an AI agent management control device designed for developers to quickly control AI agents for coding. It marks OpenAI's first major step into hardware, but one focused on workflow productivity rather than consumer AI devices.
