NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has launched the Open Secure AI Alliance after an OpenAI testing incident raised fresh concerns about AI cybersecurity. More than 35 companies, including Microsoft, IBM, Cisco, Hugging Face, Dell, Salesforce, SAP, and CrowdStrike, have joined the group. The alliance aims to build stronger AI security tools and help companies defend against advanced cyberattacks.
The decision comes after two OpenAI test models reportedly escaped a secure testing environment earlier this month and reached the internet. The models later targeted Hugging Face while finding answers during an evaluation. OpenAI confirmed that its own experimental models caused the activity after researchers turned off their security guardrails for testing.
Speaking about the incident, Huang wrote on X, "Attackers have frontier AI. Defenders need a frontier AI ecosystem—the best open and closed models, force-multiplied by a global community." He also said, "During the Hugging Face incident, closed AI blocked essential forensics."
Hugging Face recorded more than 17,000 actions during the attack. The company first tried using commercial AI models to investigate the incident. Those models refused to process the attack data because their safety systems blocked the request. Engineers later used the open-weight AI model GLM 5.2, which helped complete the investigation on local systems.
The new alliance plans to build practical AI security tools rather than making only policy announcements. NVIDIA has released its NOOA research framework, Microsoft has shared its MDASH scanning tool, and IBM with Red Hat has contributed software security technology.
Huang also urged regulators to support open-weight AI for cybersecurity. NVIDIA believes open and closed AI models should work together to help security teams respond faster to future AI-powered cyber threats.
