NASA is all set to launch its first crewed lunar mission after more than five years. The mission features  Artemis II. The astronauts on the mission will carry not only scientific instruments but also a collection of deeply symbolic personal items.

The Artemis II  is reportedly going to take a digital archive of more than 5.6 million names submitted by people worldwide through NASA’s ‘send your name’ campaign. The archive will be stored onboard in the Orion spacecraft.

Fly Me To The Moon: Introducing Artemis II

By allowing millions to join the NASA journey symbolically, Artemis II will not just be a technical milestone, but also a shared human experience.

But who are the crew members, and what is their pov about this journey? The crew comprises four members, who will travel on a 10-day mission around the Moon.

Here is the list of the crew members and their perspectives about Artemis II:

Reid Wiseman (Commander): Wiseman was born in Baltimore, Maryland. He lost his wife to cancer in 2020 and has raised their two teenage daughters alone. He said, “Here's where the will is, here's where the trust documents are, and if anything happens to me, here's what's going to happen to you. That's part of this life.”

Christina Koch (Mission specialist): A physicist and engineer who became an astronaut in 2013. She says, “The fact that it was a human behind that lens made that picture so much more profound and changed the way we thought of our own home.”

Jeremy Hansen (Mission specialist): Jeremy Hansen is a physicist and an ex-Royal Canadian Air Force fighter pilot who joined the Canadian Space Agency in 2009. He believes that “The Artemis missions have set such an ambitious goal for humanity that nations around the globe are coming together.”

Victor J Glover (Pilot):  Victor Glover is a former US Navy fighter pilot and test pilot. He has been working with NASA astronauts since 2013. In line with this mission, he explains, “It is part of being human. We go out to explore, to learn where we are, why we are, and to understand the big questions about our place in the universe.”

Artemis II: The Future Of Space Explorations

Artemis II will also introduce new personal equipment through its implementation of wearable technology. The astronauts will use ARCHeR wristbands, which can track their bodily functions and environmental conditions throughout the entire mission.

Moreover, the mission of Artemis II serves a dual purpose. It will upgrade scientific understanding for future-ready space exploration. It also carries personal and collective identities, bringing a symbiotic relationship of technology and emotions.
