Microsoft is signaling a massive transformation in Xbox hardware strategy, which could mean that the next console generation will make it hard to tell the difference between the dedicated gaming devices and PCs.
During an interview about the recent ROG Xbox Ally X, a handheld running Windows co-built with ASUS, Sarah Bond subtly hinted at the next platform it will provide: “a very premium, very high-end, curated experience.” Bond has also claimed that the principle for the next generation of gaming can be found in handheld devices.
Earlier, announcements had suggested Microsoft’s long-term deal with AMD to develop custom chips for a range of devices, including consoles, handhelds, and cloud. Importantly, they reiterated that the next Xbox would not be restricted to a single game store.
Considering these hints alone, analysts suppose that Microsoft might be presenting the next-gen Xbox as a hybrid apparatus: a console in the living room, and a Windows-powered device able to utilize PC storefronts and libraries.
As one commenter put it: “An Xbox console where you can access and play your PC gaming library across multiple PC launchers and digital storefronts…sounds like exactly the kind of thing that could make Xbox consoles interesting again.”
That said, Microsoft has not outright stated that the Xbox will be able to run all PC software or function as a PC. Bond's comments intentionally keep things unclear, and there is no indication of a release timeline.
The word ‘console’ still has its meaning, but it seems to be changing. By confirming backward compatibility and progressively adopting the ecosystem strategy, the subsequent Xbox generation might be the most daring endeavour of the company so far.
Should this pathway be chosen, gamers would anticipate a top-end product that attracts a higher price, guarantees wider access (Windows games + Xbox games), avoids a monopoly through a single retail outlet, and maximizes the power of the custom-made AMD silicon.
Microsoft looks prepared not only to offer another box but also to change the meaning of ‘console.’
