Apple is making a big change to the iPhone 18 Pro camera. After nine years of hard work, the Cupertino-based tech giant has finally updated the lens. The iPhone 18 Pro's 48MP Fusion Main camera now features a mechanical iris made of six laser-cut blades. The iris can adjust the lens opening. It will offer four aperture settings: f/1.48, f/1.8, f/2.8, and f/4. Six laser-cut blades will control the opening. The widest f/1.48 setting can let in around 50% more light than f/1.8.
Aperture controls light and depth of field at once. Light gathering depends mostly on the f-number ratio. Divide the smaller opening by the larger one, then square the answer to get the multiplier. Depth of field depends on sensor size and f-number. Multiply the f-number by that crop factor to get the full-frame equivalent for depth of field.
The iris gives the main camera more control than before. It can open wider in dark scenes to bring in more light. Users can close it down when they want a different look. This gives the camera more flexibility across different lighting conditions.
According to the supply chain analysis, the current lens unit costs about 50% more than the seven-element lens used in the iPhone 17 Pro. That’s a major jump for one component in a phone. Additionally, cinematic effects can now be applied to standard footage after the shot, at up to 60 frames per second, in 4K Dolby Vision.
Further, Time-lapse records in 4K Dolby Vision HDR. To progress further, the devices will have Smart Focus Tracking that holds a subject on the device and again captures it after it leaves the shot and returns.

The move is interesting because Apple is not relying on a larger sensor. The 1/1.28-inch main sensor has reportedly stayed in place since the iPhone 14 Pro. Instead, the new lens design could help it capture more light.
The iPhone 18 Pro camera upgrade is less about adding a bigger sensor and more about improving how the lens works. The new iris could give both casual users and photographers more control over their shots.
