India Faces Lower AI Job Disruption Risk: World Bank

India has less to fear from AI than richer countries, the World Bank said in its 2026 report. The report came out Tuesday and looked at how AI could affect jobs worldwide. It found lower job risks in developing countries, while AI could help workers become more productive. India could gain by using simple and low-cost AI tools for local needs.

The World Bank said 4.5% of jobs in low and middle-income countries face AI automation risks. The figure rises to 14.2% in high-income countries, showing greater job pressure in richer economies. AI could also improve productivity in 16.2% of jobs across developing economies.

“AI has thrown developing economies a lifeline, and they should seize it,” said Indermit Gill, the World Bank’s chief economist. Gill said smaller AI tools could improve healthcare, education, farming, and public services.

India could use AI to help farmers with crop advice and weather information. Healthcare workers could also use AI tools to support medical checks in rural areas. Schools and government offices could use AI for learning and public services.

The report also points to growing AI use among businesses in developing countries. However, India still faces risks in call centers, outsourcing, and entry-level technology jobs.

The World Bank wants countries to first use existing AI tools and adapt them locally. Advanced AI development can come later after basic systems become stronger.

India needs better electricity, internet access, skilled workers, useful data, and strong institutions to gain from AI. Stronger foundations could help AI create wider benefits without increasing inequality.
