GTA 6 Price Feels High, but Math Says it’s the Cheapest Mainline GTA in 25 Years

GTA 6's $79.99 price has sparked fresh debate, but inflation suggests the new game may actually cost less than earlier GTA titles when their launch prices are compared in today's money.

The price of GTA 6 is again at the center of discussion. Rockstar Games has set the Standard Edition at $79.99, and many fans believe that is too expensive. However, a closer look tells a different story. When the prices of older GTA games are adjusted for inflation, GTA 6 may actually be one of the cheapest main games in the series.

This does not mean players are happy about paying more. Living costs have gone up, and many people feel paying every extra dollar is an unnecessary burden. Still, the numbers show the debate is more complicated than it first appears.

Older GTA Games Would Cost More Today

The GTA 6 price debate has been going on for a long time. Though the original price didn’t touch the speculative $100 mark, the first look at $79.99 still feels expensive. It sounds like the highest price Rockstar has ever charged for a GTA game. However, inflation changes the picture.

According to the data from the National Average Wage Index, the average annual income for US workers in 2024 was $67,027, or roughly $5,600 per month. Thus, the $80 price tag of GTA 6 is only 0.119% of that annual income, compared to the other GTA entries that have reached nearly 0.15%.

If we compare, GTA 3 turns out to be the most expensive GTA entry. The game was launched in 2001 and cost around $49.99. In today's money, that works out to roughly $90. GTA: Vice City and GTA: San Andreas would also cost around that amount if they were released in 2026. GTA 4 launched at $59.99, which would be worth well over $90 today after adjusting for inflation.

This means GTA 6 is cheaper in real buying power than several earlier GTA games. The price looks bigger because people compare the numbers, not the value of money over time.

New Report Hints At A Post-Launch 60 FPS Update

Price isn’t the only thing that players care about in the game. Another fresh report from the Polish gaming podcast Rock and Borys has indicated that Rockstar may not launch GTA 6 with a 60 FPS mode if more development time is needed. Instead, the feature could arrive in a later update. Initially, the game will run at 30 FPS.

Nothing has been confirmed, but many players believe Rockstar will focus on stability first before improving performance. The report has created mixed reactions. Some fans are happy to wait if it leads to a smoother experience. Others believe a game of this size should launch with a 60 FPS option from day one.

Price Still Feels High to Many Players

Inflation helps explain why GTA 6 costs $79.99, but it does not change how players feel. Many people are already spending more on food, rent, and everyday needs. Buying a new game is harder than it was a few years ago.

This is why the discussion is heating up. On paper, GTA 6 may offer better value than older GTA games, but for many players, paying $80 at checkout still feels like a big expense.
