OpenAI recently launched its new GPT-5 model, which promised significant performance enhancements over its previous model. However, users are unhappy with the new AI model and are asking to restore GPT-4o. They believe the older version, also called the legacy model, performed better.
Many users had integrated GPT-4o into their workflows, and losing access to it has caused widespread criticism. The company promised significant improvements in writing and coding capabilities; however, it gathered mixed reactions from ChatGPT users.
Several ChatGPT users were dissatisfied with the GPT-5 model, which the startup claimed to be its most advanced LLM. One Reddit user said that GPT-4o “genuinely talked to me”, but GPT-5’s replies were “cut-and-dry corporate.” During an AMA session, a few other Reddit users told CEO Sam Altman that GPT-5 felt “dumber” and lacked a warmer personality.
Following this criticism, Altman acknowledged that the router had some issues and that GPT-5 would “seem smarter starting today.” He added that he would ensure that users clearly understood which version responded to their queries.
With the new upgrade, one of the most popular features that allowed users to conveniently switch between GPT-4o, GPT-4.1, and the mini model also disappeared. Yielding to the negative user feedback, OpenAI has now decided to bring this feature back.
Sam Altman also said they would monitor the customers' usage before deciding whether to keep the older models running. This option to switch back to GPT-4o is available only for the paid subscribers. Altman further added that GPT-4.1 could also be brought back if there is adequate demand from the paid users.

OpenAI’s most advanced and capable model was recently released, but it failed to offer what it intended. Many ChatGPT users criticised this model, saying that it is dumber than GPT-4o. They also blamed Sam Altman for removing the previous AI model without prior notice. In response, Altman acknowledged that the new release had an issue with the router and further promised that the problem would soon be fixed.
