Google has launched Nano Banana 2.1, its latest image generation and editing model, on October 6, 2026. Built on Gemini 3.6 Flash, the model improves visual quality and editing while cutting API image costs by 50%. Google is rolling out Nano Banana 2.1 across Gemini, Search AI Mode, AI Studio, Flow, Stitch, Google Ads, and enterprise tools. The update targets creators and developers seeking sharper images, steadier subjects, and cheaper large-scale production.

Nano Banana 2.1 handles 1K, 2K, and 4K outputs while supporting unusually wide and vertical image formats. It can process up to 14 reference images, tracking four characters and ten objects across multiple editing turns. Google also added search grounding, allowing generations to use information from Google Search and Google Image Search. Three thinking levels give developers more control over speed, prompt accuracy, and complex layouts.

The biggest shift arrives through pricing, with standard image output rates falling to USD 30 per million tokens. A 1K image now costs USD 0.0336, compared with about USD 0.067 under Nano Banana 2. The 2K output costs USD 0.0504, while 4K generation reaches USD 0.0756 per image. Batch processing cuts those output prices by another 50% for high volume generation.

Editing also gets more precise through improved mask-based controls and stronger subject consistency. The model can change selected areas while preserving surrounding details, which suits product creatives and campaign revisions. Better text rendering also supports posters, labels, infographics, advertisements, and other visual assets.

Google said Nano Banana 2.1 ‘outperforms our previous models across the board’ across several image generation and editing improvements. The company highlighted visual design, mask-based editing, and subject consistency as major upgrades.

The update also introduces C2PA Content Credentials for digital origin tracking across supported workflows. Google’s model card lists stronger internal results for editing, multi-reference work, and character consistency. Nano Banana 2.1 is now generally available through the Gemini API, while its broader product rollout continues.
