Google has officially launched Gemini Spark in India; its always-on personal AI agent that works in the background even when your phone is locked or your laptop is shut. Initially previewed at Google I/O 2026, Spark is currently rolling out to Google AI Ultra subscribers, with Google AI Pro subscribers getting access over the coming weeks.
The core pitch behind Gemini Spark is a significant departure from how AI assistants have worked until now. Rather than responding to individual prompts, Spark is designed to autonomously complete multi-step tasks over time, continuing to work in the background on Google's cloud infrastructure even without the user's active involvement.
Google describes it as a round-the-clock personal assistant, built on the upgraded Gemini 3.6 Flash model. The agent integrates natively with Google Workspace apps including Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, and Calendar, with no manual setup required. Tasks it can handle range from organising emails in a personalised writing style and summarizing wedding RSVPs, to planning travel itineraries across multiple services and managing recurring subscriptions.
Gemini Spark is built around three core components. A Task is the outcome a user wants the AI to achieve. This includes anything from a simple request like clearing a cluttered inbox to a complex multi-step workflow like coordinating a business trip across flights, hotels, and calendar blocks. Schedules allow users to set recurring automations, for example, a weekly summary of unread emails every Monday morning.
Skills represent the specific capabilities Spark can apply, some of which will expand over time through updates. The AI agent can also interact with websites on a user's behalf through a browser-based environment.
However, Google has not confirmed which web capabilities will be available immediately as part of the India rollout. Its rival OpenAI launched ChatGPT Work earlier this month, targeting a similar positioning in the enterprise and productivity space.

Gemini Spark gives users complete control over what the agent can access and do. They can limit the apps it can connect to or turn it off entirely. It is designed to ask for explicit approval before performing anything it classifies as a high-stakes, irreversible action, such as sending an email without prior review, making a purchase, or any action that is difficult to reverse.
Google has positioned this human-in-the-loop design as a deliberate safeguard rather than an afterthought. It describes Spark as an agent that operates under the user’s supervision. The India launch follows a broader global rollout and marks the tech giant’s clearest step yet toward agentic AI products that handle repetitive digital work autonomously.
