With Google’s Gemini gaining traction in the generative AI race, many users who once relied on ChatGPT have now begun experimenting with Google’s chatbot. This shift, however, comes with a familiar frustration: conversation history does not travel across platforms.
Personalization built over weeks or months in preferences, context, and writing style gets wiped out when users switch chatbots. Every move means starting from scratch. Google now appears to be working to solve this lapse.
According to a report shared by tipster Testing Catalog, Google is conducting tests on its new Gemini feature, which enables users to import AI chat data. The feature exists in its beta testing phase, which became known through leaked screenshots of the feature.
The tool enables users to transfer their chat histories from different AI services to Gemini, where they can continue their conversations while maintaining all contextual information. This includes chats from services such as ChatGPT and Claude.
The goal is clear: reduce friction for users switching AI ecosystems.
Based on the leaked information, users will first need to download their conversation history from the original AI platform. Following that, files can be uploaded directly into Gemini using the new import option.
After upload, Gemini will reportedly parse the conversations and resume interactions without requiring users to re-enter background information or preferences.

The feature comes with an important caveat. Google notes that imported conversations will become part of the user’s activity history.
According to the screenshot, this data may be used to improve Google’s services, including training its generative AI models. Users will retain the ability to manage or delete their activity at any time.
Consumers can export their ChatGPT history by heading to Settings, opening Data Controls, and selecting Export Data. OpenAI then emails a download link containing a ZIP file with chat records.
For now, the import feature remains unconfirmed publicly, but if launched, it could mark a key shift in how users move between competing AI platforms.
