Google has started letting Gemini users remove visible AI watermarks from generated media starting August 14. The change covers images, videos, and music created with Google AI tools.
The new option targets creators who want cleaner files for presentations, campaigns, and social media posts. Users can control the visible AI watermark through the Media Watermark setting in Gemini.
Josh Woodward, Google's vice president for Gemini, explained the reason behind the change on X. He wrote, “We’re striking a balance here between creative control and safety.”
Woodward also confirmed that invisible SynthID watermarks and C2PA metadata will remain active. These tools help identify AI-generated content even without a visible mark.
The setting covers Google's Nano Banana, Omni, and Lyria models across supported Gemini experiences. Google also plans to bring the same control to Search in a future update.
Gemini users can open Settings and find the Media Watermark option after receiving the update. Switching the option off removes the visible mark from newly generated media.
The change does not apply everywhere, as some regions require visible labels for AI-generated content. Google will keep visible markings where local laws require them.
The update gives creators more control without removing Google's main provenance tools. SynthID remains embedded in supported media, while C2PA metadata can provide information about content origin.
Google's Gemini account on X also confirmed the new control for future media. The company said users can toggle visible watermarks on or off through settings.
The move reflects a wider shift toward invisible AI identification instead of permanent visible labels. It also gives creators cleaner content while keeping technical methods for AI verification.
