Google can automatically delete WhatsApp backups stored on Google Drive after five months without updates, putting old Android chats at risk. The policy affects Android users who rely on Google Account backups, especially when backup uploads stop for months.
Google may remove the backup when WhatsApp fails to refresh it, leaving nothing available during a phone change or reinstall. Google Drive Help Community guidance states, “WhatsApp backups that haven't been updated in 5 months may automatically be deleted by Google.”
The risk can grow when storage fills up, backup settings change, or uploads fail repeatedly without checks. Google Drive keeps only the newest WhatsApp backup, so each successful upload replaces the previous copy. Older versions do not sit in a trash folder, making accidental chat removal harder to reverse later.
Google Drive also encrypts WhatsApp backups, preventing direct browsing or restoration through regular Google apps and websites. Google Drive Help Community guidance warns that deleted, overwritten, or expired WhatsApp backups cannot return through Google or WhatsApp support
Android users can reduce the risk by opening WhatsApp Settings, Chats, then Chat Backup regularly. A Daily or Weekly schedule can keep the cloud copy active, while available Google storage helps prevent failed uploads. The listed Google Account should also match the account used for regular backups.
Important conversations can receive extra protection through WhatsApp’s Export Chat feature, which creates a separate copy outside the backup system. Local Android backups may also provide another recovery option when recent chats disappear from Google Drive.
The warning matters most during phone upgrades, when users often discover missing backups only after installing WhatsApp. Checking the last backup date before switching devices can reveal problems early and prevent an unpleasant restore failure. A quick check today can protect years of conversations from a five-month inactivity deletion.
