After years of delay, Facebook users who filed lawsuits against the company under a privacy settlement are now receiving their payments. The $725 million settlement resolves a shocking claim. The platform was accused of allowing the personal data of millions of users to be accessed without their permission by political consulting groups. Payments have already started and will continue in batches for eligible claimants over the next 10 weeks.
Facebook was accused of mishandling private information and granting third parties, such as Cambridge Analytica, access to personal user data without the users’ consent. In 2018, it was established that data belonging to nearly 87 million users had been stolen and used during the 2016 US elections.
In 2023, a lawsuit was filed stating that Facebook had broken privacy rules. The settlement was sanctioned the same year, but payments were postponed due to court challenges. Analysts comment that the case spotlighted increased scrutiny of technology firms regarding data privacy.
Members who had an active Facebook account between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022, and claimed before August 2023, are eligible. More than 19 million valid claims were made. Payments are determined on a point basis; each month of account usage equals points.
People with longer histories will receive more payments. The average payment will be between $25 and $30, but some customers will receive more based on account usage. Although the amounts are small, analysts describe the settlement as vital because it upholds corporate responsibility for privacy violations.

The payments began on September 3, 2025. They will be distributed in batches within 10 weeks. Consumers considered eligible for compensation will receive an email alert several days before the initiation. Payment methods include PayPal, Venmo, Zelle, prepaid Mastercard, direct deposit, or paper check.
Successful claimants won’t have to do anything further. The Facebook privacy settlement has a larger effect on the value of digital privacy, reminding tech companies that an individual’s data must be treated with respect and might eventually lead to more comprehensive data privacy laws.
These payments mark the end of years of legal wrangling for millions of users across the United States. Though the sums themselves are small, this settlement marks the parting of ways for an issue in American data privacy law. This makes it an unavoidable responsibility for huge technology companies, which ensures that they do not mishandle user information.
