Pearl Abyss has shared fresh details about Crimson Desert. The studio has announced that it is working on a Nintendo Switch 2 port and multiplayer features. This announcement immediately caught the attention of gamers worldwide.

The main reasons for Crimson Desert's popularity include its expansive world, strong story, and impressive visuals. Now, players are wondering how those ideas will work on Nintendo's next console and whether multiplayer will become part of the experience.

Pearl Abyss Talks About Switch 2 and Multiplayer

On July 8, 2026, the South Korean game developer studio, Pearl Abyss, held a corporate briefing where it told investors about the upcoming roadmap for its most successful RPG, Crimson Desert. According to reports, in that event, the company's CEO, Huh Jin-young, revealed several details, including a multiplayer mode and a Switch 2 port.

The Switch 2 port of the game entered R&D in March, and since then, there has been almost no news about it. The latest event shed some light, as the CEO mentioned it’s still in its early stages, so there’s no declaration on the release date.

He stated, “We are reviewing the Nintendo Switch 2, and it is currently being developed to a level where basic gameplay is possible. However, platform expansion is not just a simple port; the key is whether we can fully maintain the graphics, action, and open-world experience of Crimson Desert on that device. The Switch 2 version still requires optimization and technical verification, and we must also review partner collaboration and whether it meets our quality standards.”

Further, during the event, Jin-young confirmed that the studio is exploring multiplayer. At the same time, about the challenges he mentioned, “However, multiplayer is not just a matter of adding a mode. It is a major task that requires reviewing server structures, balance, platform-specific stability, and operating systems.”

About the release of the mode, he continued, “We are currently conducting various studies on both technical feasibility and gameplay. While it is not the stage to discuss a confirmed release plan, we are continuously reviewing ways to allow users to enjoy the Crimson Desert IP for longer, and I believe there is room for a multiplayer mode in that process.”

Can Switch 2 Handle A Game Like This?

Crimson Desert is a demanding game. It has a huge world, detailed environments, weather effects, and fast battles. Running all of that on a smaller console is a big challenge. The developers will need to load the world smoothly as players travel from place to place.

The task is difficult, but not impossible. Previously, games like The Witcher 3 and Hogwarts Legacy came to Nintendo with ports that work properly on the console without compromising quality. These games have proved that RPGs can run on portable systems, with some necessary changes.

The Witcher Effect

Crimson Desert shares a few goals with big fantasy RPGs. It wants to tell a good story, give you a big world to explore, and memorable characters to create. The big question is, can multiplayer be worked into that kind of game? If done well, it could give players new ways to enjoy the world without taking away from the main story.

At this point, Pearl Abyss is trying to balance both ideas. The studio plans to create a rich single-player adventure, but is also exploring ways to bring more players into the world of Crimson Desert.
