China has introduced a commercial 10-Gigabit (10G) broadband network in Sunan County, Hebei Province. Telecommunications giant Huawei and state-owned operator China Unicom collaborated on the project. The ultra-high-speed internet is set to boost global competition and innovation across multiple sectors.
The new China 10G network is built to provide download speeds of up to 9,834 Mbps (almost 10 Gbps). It will also offer an upload speed of approximately 1,008 Mbps, and a network latency as low as 3 milliseconds.
Downloading big files or streaming ultra-high-definition videos will become quicker and smoother than ever before. Currently, downloading a 20GB 4K film on a standard 1Gbps connection takes approximately 7-10 minutes. The new 10G network would be able to do the same in less than 20 seconds.
The broadband is driven by cutting-edge 50G Passive Optical Network (PON) technology. This technology boosts data transmission speed over current fibre-optic networks. It aims to address issues related to bandwidth-consumptive activities. For example, activities like cloud computing, VR, AR, and 8K video streaming will benefit the most from 10G broadband.
