OpenAI has introduced major advancements to its new image model, GPT Image 1.5. The latest upgrades offer remarkable improvements in both quality and speed. Can this new image model surpass the Nano Banana Pro? Let's take a look at what it has to offer.
OpenAI announced the rollout of a new version of ChatGPT Images, powered by its latest image generation model, GPT-Image-1.5. The company stated: “Today, we’re releasing a new version of ChatGPT Images (opens in a new window), powered by our new flagship image generation model. Now, whether you’re creating something from scratch or editing a photo, you’ll get the output you’re picturing. It makes precise edits while keeping details intact, and generates images up to 4x faster.”
“Alongside, we’re introducing a new Images feature (opens in a new window) within ChatGPT, designed to make image generation delightful to spark inspiration and make creative exploration effortless,” the statement added.
The upgrade is now available for both free and paid ChatGPT users. OpenAI also introduced an Images tab in ChatGPT. This is a hub for both accessing the images you generate and generating new ones.
OpenAI claimed that GPT Image 1.5 has better text rendering and is consistent with prompts. Users can witness that object boundaries are cleaner during edits. Its turnaround time also seems faster, with multi-image batches arriving more quickly.
GPT Image 1.5 maintains global style and geometry while removing or adding people in an image. Users are appreciating its improved editing pipeline.
OpenAI said the earlier version of ChatGPT Images will remain available as a custom GPT, and added that further improvements are planned in future releases.
GPT Image 1.5 is the biggest image upgrade ChatGPT has received. It is snappier, cleaner, and more attentive to prompts. GPT Image 1.5 is more suitable for brainstorming, iterating, or creating a mood board. Nano Banana Pro usually needs fewer retries for diagramming and marketing layouts.

For casual users, GPT image 1.5 is more suitable. However, precision-heavy works that require precise typography, panel counts, and spatial logic will benefit from Nano Banana Pro's more reliable output.
Organizations are concerned about Google’s SynthID watermarking and the industry-backed C2PA standard. These features mark AI-generated content and maintain authentication. OpenAI’s commitments are ambitious, but clean, consistent labeling across outputs will be critical as businesses ramp up use.
