OpenAI is bringing ChatGPT Dots to Google Messages and Apple iMessage, allowing users to text AI agents without opening ChatGPT. Announced on October 28, 2026, the feature supports RCS messaging on Android and iMessage on iPhone.

It lets users assign tasks, share media and receive updates directly through their regular messaging apps. The preview currently targets ChatGPT Pro subscribers in the United States.

The integration expands OpenAI’s personal AI agents beyond ChatGPT, Slack and Microsoft Teams. A Dot can monitor a product’s price, track a task or follow travel plans, then send relevant updates automatically.

Users can exchange text, photos and voice messages with their agents through supported messaging services. OpenAI says the feature also retains conversation context and connected plugins across channels.

AI Agents Can Send Updates Without Prompts

The biggest change is that ChatGPT Dots can contact users when important developments occur. For example, an agent monitoring a product could send an update when its price drops. This approach reduces the need to repeatedly open ChatGPT and check ongoing tasks manually.

Users can activate the feature by opening their Dot’s profile and selecting Texting. Android users need RCS enabled, while iPhone users need iMessage configured. They must also verify their phone number and save the Dot’s contact before starting a conversation.

OpenAI Addresses Messaging Privacy

The new feature raises questions about AI access to personal messaging apps. OpenAI says each Dot can text only its assigned user, and only that user can message the Dot.

Enabling texting does not give OpenAI or the agent access to other text conversations. The company also says it uses Linq, a third-party messaging provider, to handle messages.

For now, the feature remains limited to a US preview for ChatGPT Pro subscribers. OpenAI has not announced a wider rollout for India or other regions. The launch brings AI assistance closer to everyday messaging, while making task updates easier to access.
