Activision is preparing to end Call of Duty: Warzone support on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, bringing the game's run on last-generation consoles to a close on November 6, 2026. The shutdown will coincide with the arrival of Season 1 for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4.

The change does not mean Warzone is disappearing entirely. The free-to-play battle royale will continue operating on supported platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. However, players using older consoles will no longer be able to access the game after the deadline.

Why Activision is Ending Last-Gen Support

Activision announced the decision earlier this year as part of its plans to move the franchise towards current-generation hardware. Modern Warfare 4 is not being released for PS4 or Xbox One, making it difficult to maintain the same Warzone experience across older systems.

The transition also allows developers to focus on newer hardware when introducing maps, gameplay features and seasonal content. Warzone was originally released in March 2020 and became one of the franchise's most popular free-to-play experiences. Its availability on older consoles helped it reach a wide audience.

What Happens to Existing Players?

Players who already downloaded Warzone on PS4 or Xbox One were allowed to continue playing until the shutdown. However, Activision had already removed the game from both consoles' digital storefronts on June 4, preventing new downloads. The in-game store was also closed on June 25, ending purchases through those versions.

November 5 will be the final full day for players using the older consoles. From November 6, the servers will no longer be available on either platform.

Progress and Purchases Can Carry Forward

Players do not necessarily lose their accumulated progress and eligible purchases. Activision has confirmed that progression and supported content can carry over to newer platforms when users sign in with the same linked Activision account.

This means players who move to PS5 or Xbox Series X|S can continue their Warzone experience without starting entirely from scratch. The shutdown marks the end of an era for players who have spent years playing Warzone on older consoles. However, Activision's focus is now firmly on newer hardware as the franchise enters its next seasonal chapter.
