Bungie is changing course on two of its biggest franchises as the studio outlines what it calls its 'next chapter'. The developer plans to bring previously vaulted Destiny 2 campaigns, destinations, and raids back into the game, while also reshaping Marathon into a broader survival experience.
The announcement came months after Bungie said it was ending planned live-service development for Destiny 2. The studio’s new leadership said its latest strategy focuses on rebuilding player trust, restoring older content, and concentrating resources on fewer priorities.
Bungie said it has started work on restoring major pieces of Destiny 2’s history that are no longer accessible. The returning content will include campaigns, destinations, and raids, and will be made available to all Destiny 2 players.
The developer acknowledged that removing older experiences had affected player trust and said restoring them would be an important step toward preserving the game’s history.
However, bringing back the content will require more than simply reactivating old files. Changes made to Destiny 2 since the Beyond Light expansion mean Bungie needs to update elements including lighting, encounters, enemies, and underlying systems before the older material can return.
Bungie is also planning a substantial evolution for Marathon, its sci-fi extraction shooter. The studio said the game attracted players who connected with its distinctive style, but did not reach as many people as expected. Rather than abandoning the project, Bungie plans to expand Marathon beyond its original genre constraints and introduce a deeper survival experience.
The developer wants to give players more ways to approach the game, including cooperative PvE, competitive PvP, and its existing PvPvE format. Bungie said it will continue working on combat, the game world and competitive elements throughout Marathon’s first year.
The changes will arrive through a series of updates. Bungie has moved content originally planned for September into the Symbiosis update scheduled for December 8.
Symbiosis will introduce Marathon’s first permanent PvE experience, along with a refreshed Perimeter area, a social space with a firing range, a new Runner shell and an experimental Team Deathmatch mode. A smaller October update will reset progression and the in-game economy while refreshing rewards.

Bungie said its future strategy will center on fewer priorities, greater transparency, and more consistent communication when plans change. The studio also said player feedback will have a greater role in shaping development.
For Destiny, the immediate focus is restoring parts of its past while building a longer-term future. For Marathon, Bungie is betting on a broader gameplay experience to expand its audience and establish a more sustainable path forward.
