Apple Inc. is facing fresh engineering challenges in developing its first foldable iPhone. The setback could delay shipments and disrupt its planned entry into the foldable markets.
According to a Nikkei Asia report, Apple engineers have experienced problems while conducting their engineering tests, which ensure that their products meet performance standards in actual use situations. The problems seem to relate to the folding system and screen reliability, both of which determine the effectiveness of a foldable device.
Apple continues to refine hinge strength, reduce screen creasing, and ensure long-term reliability. These factors demand precision and repeated testing, which extends development timelines when flaws emerge.
Apple was aiming for a launch during the latter part of 2026. Delays could push shipments by several months, depending on how quickly engineers resolve these issues. The supply chain partners have been informed of the possibility of delays, indicating uncertainty in the manufacturing timeline.
At this stage, delays may not impact launches, but availability might be limited.
Apple has remained reluctant to enter the foldable market thus far, allowing others to develop several versions of such devices over the years. It wants to launch its own product in the new category once everything is confirmed.
This also means that there might have been some problems with the products launched by other companies so far.
