Apple may be scaling back some of the display technology planned for its 20th-anniversary iPhone, but the company could still deliver a major visual redesign in 2027. The upcoming model is expected to feature a four-sided curved display for a near-borderless appearance.
According to industry reports, “Apple delayed plans to introduce Color Filter on Encapsulation (COE) and LTPO+ display technologies in the anniversary iPhone. The technologies were reportedly being developed with Samsung Display and LG Display for the 2027 model.”
COE and LTPO+ were expected to improve several aspects of the iPhone display. COE integrates the colour filter into the display structure and reduces panel thickness while improving light efficiency.
LTPO+, meanwhile, is designed to improve display power efficiency with the transistor technology used to drive the panel. However, reports suggest Apple can postpone both technologies, with no revised adoption timeline currently confirmed.
Industry sources have pointed to two possible factors behind the decision: technology maturity and rising production costs. Adding new display components could increase manufacturing expenses at a time when memory prices are also putting pressure on smartphone costs.
Looking ahead, Apple is expected to pursue a four-sided curved OLED display. The panel would curve subtly around all four edges, creating the impression of a larger screen and significantly reducing the visual presence of the frame.
Earlier reports described Apple's approach as a ‘micro-curved’ design rather than the deeper waterfall-style displays used by some Android manufacturers. The shallow curvature could also help reduce image distortion and make edge gestures more comfortable.
Apple could use optical engineering alongside the physical curve to make the display appear almost bezel-free. Reports have also suggested an all-glass design as part of the company's broader redesign plans.
