Apple will have a limited number of its first foldable smartphone, iPhone Duo, available for walk-in customers when it reaches stores on Friday, October 23, 2026. The announcement comes after online preorders sold out within minutes, leaving some buyers facing delivery estimates as late as January 2027.
The company confirmed the limited availability on Wednesday, October 21, as anticipation builds around its entry into the foldable smartphone market. Apple is working to get the device to customers as quickly as possible, but shoppers who want to buy one without preordering may struggle to secure a unit on launch day.
Demand for the iPhone Duo has been strong since preorders opened. Some configurations quickly became unavailable for immediate delivery, pushing estimated arrival dates into January.
The delays could reflect both high demand and manufacturing challenges. Unlike conventional smartphones, foldable phones rely on complex hinge mechanisms and flexible displays, which can make production more demanding.
Apple has not publicly confirmed that manufacturing difficulties are responsible for the limited launch inventory. However, analysts believe the phone's intricate hinge design could slow production at scale.
Apple said that selected stores in the United States, Australia, Canada, Mexico, and much of the United Kingdom and Europe will offer limited quantities for walk-in purchases. Customers can also collect eligible online orders from participating stores.
Availability will be more restricted in several other markets. In India, mainland China, Japan, Hong Kong, South Korea, Malaysia, Taiwan, Thailand and the United Arab Emirates, in-store availability will be limited to customers who have already placed online orders. Macau is an exception, with Apple allowing walk-in purchases there, although supplies will remain limited.

The iPhone Duo marks Apple's first move into a segment where Samsung and Huawei have already established foldable smartphone lines. Apple introduced iPhone Duo in September, and it is expected to compete in the premium end of the market. Foldable phones offer a larger display in a device that folds for easier carrying, but their complex construction creates manufacturing challenges.
Apple has not provided a specific timeline for when store supplies will improve. For buyers who have not preordered, availability may depend on the country, store, and remaining inventory when sales begin on Friday. The launch will test whether Apple can turn strong early interest into sustained demand while scaling production of its first foldable iPhone.
