Apple Signs Deal with Huxe After AI Audio Startup Shuts Down

Apple has signed an agreement that gives it the option to hire employees from Huxe, an artificial intelligence startup focused on personalized audio, while licensing the company’s technology. According to reports, the arrangement was disclosed in a European Commission filing.

The agreement does not amount to a full acquisition of Huxe. Instead, Apple will be able to make employment offers to certain members of the startup’s team and obtain a non-exclusive license to its intellectual property. The filing does not confirm whether any employees have joined Apple or identify the people covered by the arrangement.

Huxe Was Founded by Former Google Researchers

Huxe was established by Raiza Martin, Jason Spielman and Stephen Hughes, who previously worked on Google’s NotebookLM project, now known as Gemini Notebook. Google’s AI tool is known for turning documents and other source material into podcast-style audio discussions.

Huxe followed a similar concept but focused on personalized listening. Its application could generate audio briefings based on users’ emails, calendars and interests, helping them consume information in a conversational format.

The service also allowed listeners to interrupt AI-generated hosts, ask questions and request further explanations. This interactive approach distinguished the app from conventional audio summaries and podcasts.

AI Audio Startup Shut Down in May

Huxe announced in May 2026 that it was winding down operations, saying its team was moving on and that product development would stop. Its audio service ended on May 28. Apple notified the European Commission about the hiring and licensing arrangement on June 9, according to the reports.

The timing places the agreement shortly after Huxe’s shutdown. However, the available information does not establish whether the deal caused the closure or explain the financial and commercial terms involved.

What the Deal Could Mean for Apple

The arrangement gives Apple access to Huxe’s intellectual property without requiring it to acquire the startup outright. A non-exclusive license also means the agreement does not, by itself, establish that Apple owns the technology or has exclusive rights to use it.

The deal could be relevant to Apple’s broader interest in artificial intelligence and audio experiences. Huxe’s technology centred on generating personalized spoken content and enabling interactive conversations, capabilities that could potentially complement future audio products. Apple has not announced specific plans to integrate Huxe’s technology into Apple Podcasts or other services. The filing also leaves the scope of any employee recruitment unclear.
