Apple has introduced major Apple Photos upgrades in iOS 27, bringing AI editing, smarter organization and customizable slideshows. The update arrived on November 4, 2026, with new features across iPhone photo management and sharing. Apple Intelligence powers several editing tools, while improved albums make photo sharing more flexible. These additions focus on making everyday photo editing and library management easier.

The biggest changes include Extend, Spatial Reframing and an upgraded Clean Up tool. Apple also improves iCloud Shared Albums with full-resolution media, broader platform support and additional participant controls. The changes give users more creative control without requiring separate editing applications.

AI Editing Gets Three New Capabilities

Apple Intelligence introduces three editing improvements that change how users adjust existing pictures. Extend expands images beyond their original borders and fills missing areas with generated details. It can also straighten horizons or change aspect ratios without removing important subjects.

Spatial Reframing offers another approach by letting users adjust an image's perspective after capture. Users can drag photos and preview composition changes in real time. Apple uses spatial imaging technology associated with Vision Pro to support this feature.

Clean Up also receives a significant improvement, delivering more realistic results when removing distractions. Apple says the tool can now handle complex scenes with better-quality image filling.

Shared Albums Become More Flexible

iCloud Shared Albums receive their first major upgrades in years through iOS 27. Users can share full-resolution photos and videos while inviting Android and Windows participants. The update also supports emoji reactions, easier photo saving and additional participant permissions.

Album expiration controls add another useful option for managing shared collections. These changes make Apple's photo-sharing experience more flexible across different devices.

New Tools Improve Photo Organization

Apple adds Captured by Identity Documents and Me under the Photos app's Utilities section. Captured by Me separates personally taken pictures from screenshots and saved images. Identity Documents identifies reference images containing passports and driver's licenses.

Users can also add keywords alongside existing captions to organize their libraries. Apple mentions additional album organization improvements without explaining their full functionality.

Customizable Slideshows Add More Control

iOS 27 also makes slideshow creation more flexible with new customization options. Users can adjust transitions and set durations for individual photos or entire presentations. A one-tap option also saves completed slideshows as videos.

Apple has retained the familiar Photos interface rather than introducing another major redesign. However, its editing, organization and sharing improvements make iOS 27 a substantial update.
